Special Guests Last Week

Last Thursday, one of the seniors, Brigitte, came to speak to our class about Frogs.  She gave a great PowerPoint presentation and then took our class to the nature trail for a frog egg hunt.  One egg had a note inside and the student who found that egg won a special prize – a stuffed frog.  Brigitte also gave us frog shaped gummies and baked frog shaped cookies.  What a fun day!

Thanks Brigitte!

Thanks Brigitte!

On Friday, Ms. Pereira from the office came and spoke to our class about her experiences growing up during apartheid.  Ms. Pereira is from South Africa, and she was able to answer the students’ questions about apartheid and how it made her feel.  In Social Studies we are learning about history, time lines, family trees, etc.  One of the ways your child can learn about the past is by talking to elders like Ms. Pereira, Ms. D’Este, myself and family members.  This is why their recent homework has involved family help.  Hopefully, you’ve enjoyed being a part of these lessons as well.

Lastly, CONGRATULATIONS to the JV Girls Basketball team for winning the VANAS tournament.  They were undefeated!  Great work girls and Coach Hall!

Champions!

See you tomorrow!

Weekend Homework! :)

Students, your homework for the weekend is to interview an older member of your family using the interview questions you wrote in your Social Studies center.  You must also make a family tree.  Please go back to at least your grandparents.  You may put pictures on your family tree, if you like, but it is not a requirement.  Here is an example of a family tree, and another one.    Good luck! :)

A recap of last week

Even though we just spent 9 days away from school, we got right back into the swing of things on Monday.  We began the final theme from our reading anthology, Talent Show, with a story by author and illustrator Tommie dePaola.  The Art Lesson is a story about a young boy named Tommy.  Tommy loves to draw and wants to become an artist when he grows up.  Our learning centers covered spelling, vocabulary from the story, grammar (past tense), phonics, guided reading, writing, and online activities.  We also learned about an author’s viewpoint.  We took our spelling and vocabulary tests; afterwards, the class made a list of five things they might like to do when they grow up and then drew a picture of that profession.

In math, we continued learning about measurement, but moved on from using centimeters, decimeters, meters,  inches, feet, and yards to miles and kilometers.  We also learned more about perimeter and how to find the perimeter of different shapes.

En matemáticas aún continuamos aprendiendo sobre medidas, fuimos de centímetros a decímetros, luego empezamos metros, pulgadas, pies, yardas y llegamos hasta metros y kilómetros. También aprendimos sobre perímetro y como conseguir el perímetro de diferentes formas.

In science, we finished up our unit on water, by applying previously learned knowledge about evaporation, condensation and precipitation as well as learning how water is filtered.  Ms. D’Este led the small groups in a water filtering activity which clearly showed how we are able to reuse water that was once dirty.

En ciencias,  terminamos nuestra unidad sobre el agua, donde trabajamos con evaporación, precipitación, condensación y la filtración de agua. Ms. D’Este guío a los niños en grupos pequeños en una actividad de filtración, donde filtraron agua sucia utilizando diferentes filtros, para que aprendieran como se recicla el agua.

We are also preparing for our upcoming assembly presentation on “Honesty”.  We will present on Friday April 27 at 7:55.  Families, you are invited to support your child.  We hope to see you there!

Este mes le toco a segundo grado presentar sobre valores en una asamblea de niños de primaria. Nos estamos preparando para nuestra presentación sobre la honestidad, la cual será presentada a los niños de primaria el día viernes 27 de abril a las 7.55 am. Están invitados a apoyar a sus hijos. Esperamos verlos ahí!

Vocabulary Hat Day – This Friday!

Families,

Familias,

Vocabulary Hat Day & Mixed Up Snack is tomorrow, March 23rd.  We will be with Ms. Bodeman’s class.  Here is the list of words that the students should make a hat for:

El Día del Sombrero de Vocabulario es manana 23 de Marzo.  Estaremos tomando nuestro desayuno con los niños de la clase de Ms. Bodeman. Aquí esta la lista de las palabras que sus hijos escogieron para su sombrero.

  1. Cloud
  2. Sand
  3. Rain Gauge
  4. Technology
  5. Sculpture
  6. Globe
  7. Communication
  8. Symbol
  9. Transportation
  10. Clay
  11. Magma
  12. Island
  13. Recycle
  14. Map
  15. Aggregated
  16. Natural Resource

Remember, the vocabulary words should NOT be printed on the hat.  Rather, make picture clues so others can guess the correct vocabulary word.  Have fun! :P

Recuérdense que la palabra no debe estar escrita en el sombrero. En vez de escribirlo en el sombrero, deberían hacer dibujos o ponerle cosas al sombrero que lleven a los demás niños a adivinar la palabra correspondiente. Diviértanse!
